They only heard it at night.
Delicate footsteps of someone climbing the stairs. And only after everyone was in their bed.

At first, the girls thought nothing of it.
Then they started wondering who it was walking up and down the stairs in the middle of the night.
After a couple of days, they wondered if it is not one of them, but someone, or something else.

But still they kept their thoughts to themselves.

After a week, they shared their uneasiness with a few of their housemates.
Once the sound grew louder, all the girls voiced out their discomfort.

They were uneasy, yes, but not to the point of freaking out. They planned to move out at the end of the month.

That night, they heard the screams.
